Keshav Baliram Hedgewar (April 1, 1889 – June 21, 1940) was an Indian physician and the founder of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization in India. Hedgewar was born in Nagpur, Maharashtra, and received his medical degree from Calcutta University. He was actively involved in the Indian independence movement and joined the Indian National Congress in 1920.
In 1925, Hedgewar founded the RSS with the aim of promoting Hindu unity and creating a strong, disciplined organization to work for the social and political advancement of the Hindu community. The RSS was originally focused on physical training and character-building exercises, but soon evolved into a political movement with the goal of establishing a Hindu Rashtra (Hindu nation) in India.
Hedgewar was known for his nationalist and anti-colonialist views and his commitment to the Hindu cause. He believed that Hinduism was more than just a religion, but a way of life, and that Hindus needed to come together to protect their culture and traditions. He also emphasized the need for self-discipline, self-reliance, and self-defense among Hindus.
Hedgewar passed away in 1940, but the RSS continues to be a powerful force in Indian politics today. The organization has been involved in various social, cultural, and political activities in India, and has been associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the ruling political party in India.
